Tea for musical inspiration

Great Lipton tea commercial. You see composer Lalo Schifrin at his piano in 1966. He’s composing while sipping tea.All kinds of music in his head, forming an orchestra…, Finally it’s there: the theme for Mission Impossible. “Tea sharpens the mind. Lipton Yellow Label. Thanks Frank!

As legend has it, Stay With Me by Lorraine Ellison, was recorded as a last minute booking. Frank Sinatra session was cancelled at the last minute, and the 46-piece orchestra was already booked. The songwriter Gerry Raganovy readapted this song for an orchestra. The result was a symphonic Soul classic that even though it was only a minor hit at the time, is recognized today as one of the classic ’60s soul ballads.

Stay With Me has been covered by The Walker Brothers, David Essex, Ruby Turner, Rebecca Wheatley, Janis Joplin, Genya Ravan, Terry Reid, Natalie Cole, Jimmy Witherspoon, Kiki Dee, Whitesnake, Bette Midler, and Duffy.
