Shangaan Electro

Shangaan is dance music. It is electronically music based on the South African traditional music that’s popular in the areas between Johannesburg, Limpopo and Mozambique. It is an extremely fast and energetica hyperactive hybrid of the traditional mbira, or thumb piano, and synthesizers that can reach 180 beats per minute.  This genre is super popular in South Africa and tens of thousands of Shangaan records are sold each year.

On the new compilation Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music From South Africa, you can find 12 songs released by the Nozinja Music Productions studio in Soweto between 2006 and 2009.

On Shangaan Electro you can find tracks by the Tshetsha Boys, who are the dancing clowns in the video below.  Shangaan Electro was releesed in june 2010 on Honejest Jon’s records.

Sea of CD’s

In one weekend in june  140 friends of Munro helped to make stunning inland sea made of 600.000 CD’s which are dazzling  like mirrors reflecting sunlight and moonlight.

Munro’s CDsea is the first of a number of self-funded installations using discarded or recycled materials.  After roughly two months in place the installation will be disbanded and all the CD’s sent to a recycling plant.
